Class Description:
Take felt-making to the ultimate level. Submerge yourself in sumptuous silks, yummy yarns and fabulously fine fibers to create felt scarves and wraps that demand to be touched. Explore the latest products made
especially for fiber artists interested in superior surface design.

Details:
This 2-day workshop will afford students a variety of different techniques to produce beautiful felt for garments and accessories. Using superfine merino wool, a gorgeous assortment of hand-dyed silk fibers, a 20-color palette of lightweight pre-felt yardage, gauzy woven fabrics, and an assortment of funky yarns, students will learn how to create a variety of surface textures that can be transformed into clothing, accessories or wall-art.

As the owner of Outback Fibers, Jill has access to a large selection of fibers, which will be made available for use during this workshop. Overwhelm your senses with colors and textures that will stimulate any fiber artist.

Numerous sample pieces will be completed on day #1, and much flexibility will be permitted on day #2 in the interest of learning and exploration. Students will learn the techniques for producing gossamer felt; "nuno" laminated felt onto woven fabrics; silk "fusion." These techniques will be translated into your choice of a larger project on the second day.

Student supply list:

  • Two 16-32oz plastic water/drink bottles with pull-up tops to hold water and soap gel
  • Several old towels - large or small
  • Length of rubber shelf liner or non-skid rubber throw-rug underlay (18 inches x 10 feet) available at WalMart or Target.
  • Scissors
  • Yardstick or tape measure
  • Permanent marker
  • Several plastic grocery bags
  • Iron (if possible)

If you have back problems of any kind, I suggest you bring along 4--12" pieces of 1" diameter PVC pipe. These can be slotted on to the legs of the tables to increase the height by 6", making them a more comfortable counter-top height.

Additional Fibers: Assorted fibers will be available for purchase after class each day. Avoid shipping costs.
