Carded Merino Batts--Second Quality
Carded Merino Batts
Discounted Second Quality
These discounted merino batts from DHG are from the end of a carding run and not up to the usual standards
Little nepps of wool get caught in the bristles of the drum carder over time. When the carder is cleaned off in preparation for carding a different color, the bristles are cleaned off into the last few batts. This produces a batt that is not smooth, and has noticeable tiny clumps of wool distributed evenly throughout.
These batts probably would not create a smooth felt for something like a hat. However, we have felted a piece of this carded wool and it is overtly noticeable.
That said, the incorporated nepps can create a textural element that could be interesting for vessels or for needle felting. Also, these batts would be great for Core Wool.
At this discounted price, they would be worth trying to see what they might add to your felting. Also useful as Core Wool.
Here is a picture of the some of the wool after felting (on the left) the unfelted batt (on the right). The picture does not show any flaw. However, in person one can slightly see and feel the nepps after felting.
